.history.

Alma was the second child born into House Shairfel of Megam, a small house on one of the many small islands surrounding the country. She was always very close with her family -- both her older brother, Leon, and her parents. Her life in House Shairfel was very luxury-filled and Alma was well-pampered, growing up with the best teachers, the best food, the best clothing, the best everything. Alma had no reason ever to want.

She was exceptionally close to Leon, her brother who was several years her senior, and has several distinct memories in her younger years of following him around just because he was her brother and that was how things should be. She still has some of the toys he gave her when she was very small (a stuffed tiger, a whistle) as well as gifts he gave her once she got older (a necklace, a dress, jewels and pretty things). She's kept every gift that she can remember receiving from him for her birthday and the Festival of Leaves both. Leon was her best friend, role model, and older brother all rolled into one, and he's remained that to this day.

Alma was inducted into the clergy at a young age, around ten, and spent several years housed in the small convent a few islands away from home, making herself terribly homesick and therefore enjoying herself all that she could on the few occasions that she got to go home. She accepted being in the clergy as her duty, but never really saw the need to stay at the convent all the time.

She quickly learned, however, that goofing off and trying to get extra time to stay home would only make her stay at the convent longer. So, instead of doing just that, she began working hard, doing all her chores as fast and as well as she could, climbing through the ranks of the tiny convent until she was one of its high priestesses and could come and go as she pleased. Ironically, she found herself staying more at the convent than she could have anticipated, and she found prayer a comforting solace from her troubles and the ways of the world.

There were two things which happened a few years ago which changed her: the first was meeting Aubrey, a noble boy from one of the neighboring houses, whom her father cared little for and Leon disdained. Alma, however, took a near-instant liking to Aubrey, striking up a friendship which eventually evolved into a courtship that is still going on, despite all of Leon and Father's dislike for the boy she happens to be courting. Alma is sure that Aubrey is a good person, if only her family would give him a chance to prove himself.

The other was that her mother, whom Alma had always taken after and been faily close to, was killed during a fairly harsh hurricane that hit the island. Her mother had been in the small boat that served as a ferry from one isle to the next, and the storm not only capsized the boat, but killed her as well. Alma has been terrified of storms ever since.

Because of her position in the convent, Alma finds herself spending more and more time at home, following Leon around as usual, when he'll let her (she still doesn't see why he won't let her go to Chimer with him), and courting Aubrey, when she can.

.personality.

Alma is usually bright and smiling, gentle, charitable, and compassionate. She's very mindful of others and willing to help whenever she's needed, always with a smile on her face as she does so. She's hesitant to ever say no to anyone, not wanting to offend or insult. She tends to pent up her rough emotions over time, trying not to let them affect her too much at any specific moment, until they all end up overflowing when something small or minute sets her off and she ends up crying or screaming (but usually not both).

She's very devoted to her family; Leon has been one of the most consistent forces in her life for as lone as she can remember, often coming to visit her even during her time in the convent or just dropping off a note or a gift for her when she was busy. She was also very close to her mother, who made the original arrangements for Alma to join the clergy, and as such, her mother's death was a crushing blow to Alma's markedly stable life. Storms frighten her badly; hurricanes are the worst, but any storm, especially ones that involve thunder or lightning, can set off her fears and send her into a spiral of panic.

She rarely thinks of herself before others, and so has been known to ignore her own needs in the past in favor of helping other people. She's been told this isn't a healthy habit, but she never seems to care. She never unloads her problems onto anyone else, and very much practices everything the scriptures say: love those who despise you, turn the other cheek when you are attacked, and treat all of mankind as they were your own kin. She's never even seen a problem with carrying out these ideas, and thinks that if more people lived according to them, the world would be a better place.

.appearance.

Alma is quite pretty, with long, slightly curly blonde hair and large, wide purple eyes. She's very thin and of about average height, and tends to grow her hair long -- past waist length -- usually tying it in a ponytail with her bangs and a few other loose strands hanging near her face. The ribbon she most often uses is another gift of Leon's from a birthday gone by.
